@historyscrolling: ⚔️ 300 — THE BATTLE OF THERMOPYLAE 🛡️ 480 BC. Thermopylae, Greece. King Leonidas I of Sparta led a Greek force against the invading army of Xerxes I of Persia. The movie 300 turned the battle into a legendary tale of 300 Spartans standing alone against millions of Persians. But the historical reality was different. The Greek force numbered several thousand men, including around 300 Spartan hoplites. Other Greek contingents fought alongside them, most famously the 700 Thespians, who chose to remain and fight to the death. The Persians also did not number millions. Ancient sources give enormous figures, but modern historians generally estimate Xerxes’ invasion force at tens of thousands to perhaps a few hundred thousand soldiers. The Greeks ultimately lost when the Persians discovered a mountain path that allowed them to surround them. Leonidas and his remaining men were killed. The battle was a defeat — but the resistance at Thermopylae became one of the most famous episodes of the Greco-Persian Wars. 🔥 Not everything in 300 is history. But Thermopylae really happened. #300 #Thermopylae #Sparta #Leonidas #AncientHistory
