One year ago today, I filmed this without realizing it would change my life forever. I genuinely thought Oliver was melting into the kids’ cuddles. We were smiling, laughing, saying how much he loved the attention. We had no idea we were watching him collapse. A ruptured hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive cancer that often shows no signs until it’s too late, was causing internal bleeding. When I tried to get him up, he couldn’t stand. He eventually got up when I said “food,” and for one brief moment I convinced myself maybe it wasn’t serious. It was. That night we rushed to the emergency hospital. The next five days became ultrasounds, draining blood from around his heart, hoping, crying, waiting, and finally saying goodbye. Oliver passed away just five days after this video. I’m sharing this a year later because I wish I had known what hemangiosarcoma looked like. If your dog suddenly collapses, seems weak, gums become pale, struggles to get up, or just doesn’t seem like themselves, don’t brush it off, even if they appear to recover. Go to the emergency vet. Sometimes they only give us one warning. I can’t change what happened to Oliver. But if his story helps even one family recognize the signs sooner, then sharing one of my hardest memories is worth it.
