Ai doesn’t have a water problem. Society has a stupid problem.

Closed loop is nothing new, it’s what cars have. It just costs more. They’ve always had the option to cool datacenters that way, they just took the cheaper route.

Hi, geoscientist here. Closed loop systems are not new, every data center uses that. Every single one. It is what is required. They fill up the system once, then it is used over and over for years and years. Thinking data centers consume thousands of gallons a day is just TikTok conjuncture. It's entirely false.

It comes back to the amount of water agriculture uses and the crops they grow aren’t for human consumption but for corporate consumption

This is not new. It’s just society is brainwashed and doesn’t understand how things actually work.

the water scare tactic isn't even really that big of an issue because the water cycle exists. just have them not using reservoirs. having farms in the desert is a much much bigger issue for water than data centers.
Their power demands, on the other hand..

There’s a lot wrong with this video. Close loop cooling has always existed. And Nvidia doesn’t make cooling systems. They simply now produce direct liquid cooled GPU systems. This was not necessary some years ago because the power and heat production of a rack of servers was not enough to justify liquid cooling. For example, a previous rack might be 5 to 10 KW but a new Nvidia 72 rack is 120 KW. completely different scale and requirements.

They’ve been closed loop in most cases already. The breakthrough here was that they announced a coolant, rather than water, that runs at higher temperatures

Nvidia didn't unveil any cooling system. They don't design cooling systems. Closed loop liquid systems are everywhere. Even open loop systems don't use a lot of water. Look at golf course water consumption. THAT would blow your mind...

The water issue is a misconception. Modern data centers largely recycle water for cooling, and the industry keeps moving in that direction. Some older facilities in water-stressed areas still use less efficient cooling, which is fair to scrutinize, but that’s a solvable engineering problem, not a reason to stop data centers. We need data centers.

Closed loop is what they have been building for years , the anti data center propaganda machine keeps pushing this water consumption issue that is just a lie , now power consumption is certainly worth watching
