A psychiatrist today defended her decision to prescribe Zoloft to Lindsay Clancy, calling it
A psychiatrist today defended her decision to prescribe Zoloft to Lindsay Clancy, calling it "a top choice, a first-line medication" for anxiety, including in postpartum women. Clancy, 35, is charged with three counts of murder for strangling her three young children in her home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, on Jan. 24, 2023. Her defense is that she's not guilty by reason of insanity because she was in a postpartum psychosis when she killed the children. "Why would you prescribe Zoloft to a young woman who's postpartum, who's coming to you with anxiety, who's telling you she can't sleep, she's got all of these symptoms, and you prescribe a medication that would have a side effect of trouble sleeping?" asked defense attorney Kevin Reddington. Jennifer Tufts said people "have very varied responses to medications." "Some have no side effects. Some have one or two. It's impossible to predict. But Zoloft is a top choice, a first-line medication for her," Tufts said. "Says who?" Reddington asked. "It's the general consensus," Tufts answered as Reddington interjected. Judge William Sullivan told Reddington to "let her finish her answer, and then I'll give you plenty of time to follow up any questions regarding her answer." "There's extensive research supporting the use of sertraline in this instance, and the general consensus among psychiatrists is that it's a first-line safe medication for individuals, including postpartum women," Tufts said. Tufts said Clancy waited "about a month" before beginning Zoloft because "I think it took her some time to decide whether that was truly what she wanted to do." "She was afraid of the drugs, wasn't she?" Reddington asked. "She was afraid of side effects," Tufts answered. "And she didn't want to take the pills, did she?" Reddington asked. "She eventually did want to take the pills because she wanted to feel better," Tufts answered. "A month later, right?" Reddington asked. "Yes," Tufts answered. #law #court #crime
