@wave____________________: We are not slaves !!! Our hair is not just hair. It is heritage. Long before colonialism, African people had an incredible relationship with their hair. Braids, locs, twists, cornrows and intricate hairstyles could represent our tribe, age, status, family, spirituality and identity. Hair was a form of art, communication and culture. Then came slavery and colonialism. Black people were stripped of their names, languages, clothing, traditions and identities. Our hair was also treated as something that needed to be controlled, hidden or changed. European standards of beauty were pushed onto African people, teaching generations that straighter, “neater” or more European-looking hair was more acceptable. And even after colonial rule ended, those ideas didn’t simply disappear. They were passed down through generations. That’s why it’s heartbreaking that sometimes Black children today are still taught that their natural hair is “bad,” “unprofessional,” “untidy,” or something they should be ashamed of. Not because our hair is actually any of those things—but because generations of colonial beauty standards taught us to see ourselves through someone else’s eyes. Wearing our natural hair isn’t rejecting beauty. It’s rejecting the idea that our natural features need permission to be beautiful. Our curls, coils, kinks, braids, twists and locs carry history. So let Black children grow up knowing that their hair is not a problem to fix. It is a part of who they are. And choosing to wear it proudly can be an act of resistance. Our hair. Our history. Our choice. #fyp #africantiktok #slavery #goviral
