He saw a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt drive on the wrong side of a tunnel. He followed the car. Then he flipped on his emergency lights for a stop. The driver pulled into an apartment lot and parked. Officer Benedict got out and met the driver, 20-year-old Trista Deal. While talking to Trista, he smelled strong alcohol. He spotted clear signs of impairment too. She admitted she drank that night but felt okay to drive. Her passenger disagreed and said she shouldn't drive. Those signs led to field sobriety tests. Trista paused at first but then agreed. Officer Benedict began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. He noted no smooth pursuit. Nystagmus jerked at maximum deviation and started before 45 degrees. Vertical nystagmus showed up. Next came the Walk and Turn. Trista missed heel-to-toe steps. She left the line several times. For One Leg Stand, she raised her foot wrong. She dropped it too soon. After the tests, Trista confessed to five drinks that night. Bad driving, alcohol smell, her words, and failed tests meant arrest for DUI. Officer Benedict read the Georgia Implied Consent Notice. She agreed to a breath test. They went first to the Downtown Precinct for the test. Her lowest breath result hit 0.206% BAC, more than twice the 0.08% limit for those over 21. He put her in the patrol car next. They headed to Clarke County Jail. There, Trista spotted her friend Savana Tipton, also 20, getting booked for Disorderly Conduct. They had partied together earlier. Jail staff booked Trista.
