cus the resources would be consumed faster with rising populations and its likely that those resources would not be fairly distributed the main reason why thanos wanted to half the population was because he saw it as the only fair option

The real answer is Thanos wasn’t worried that we would run out of resources. Thanos was aware of the celestials and he wanted to prevent them from destroying each planet so to slow down their progress, he blipped half of the universe.
