It was much easier to recognize through radio interference than the previous distress signal, CQD, which was used primarily by the Marconi Company. The ship’s radio operators transmitted both CQD and SOS, helping establish SOS as the global standard for distress communications. One final curiosity: SOS is not actually a word.
