As someone who works in universities, there's also as well as thinking they're simply able to function at a level they're not at yet, but also fundamentally not respecting expertise/experience. Social media privileges opinion as sufficient and it doesn't seem to click that 'I think' (with absolute nothing to back it up) is going to be treated with the respect that deserves in the face of genuine knowledge and deep experience. It's like bringing a marshmallow to a gun fight and being pissy people laugh.

There are no “olden days”. It’s called humility. You either have it and when you show up you are pleasant and a pleasure to meet and work with and keep your eyes and ears open or you are not pleasant and immediately scanning for who’s showing YOU respect and who isn’t, where to establish your boundaries, inject yourself and opinion, etc. One of those personalities makes friends and influences people. The other one is insufferable whether anyone admits it to them or not.

I’m also surprised at how much Gen Z WANTS to be the authority in the room. I actually think it was awesome being 21 and wanting to learn and be mentored. It’s when you are most free to mess up and make mistakes and have others help you do that in a ‘safe’ way without having any REAL responsibility. It’s an exciting time in your life to know that you’re at the very beginning and be open to becoming someone new. It’s sad to walk in the room and feel like you are the one who has all the answers and everyone else is an idiot.

Right- like you gotta be able to read the room. I’m not saying change isn’t needed in some situations. But in order to make change you need buy in from others. And you’re not going to get buy in if you are both demonstrating your lack of understanding of the environment and being rude and off-putting with your “I don’t owe anyone respect” attitude. You have to be strategic and patient.
