@maisonrickie: Today, let’s talk about hard work vs talent. A lot of people say they prefer hard work but do they really mean that? Is that a virtue people hold on to because it feels good or do they actually believe that? In this video, we explore the findings using a Harvard study. Note: had some audio issues filming this so in enhancing my voice, it weirdly altered some of my pronunciations.

Perhaps this is an explanation : Hard work elicits respect, but natural talent elicits awe, because it is inexplicable, and therefore magical, and therefore more… valuable? Personally, seeing a five year-old play Mozart is fascinating, but watching a teenager work real hard on the same piece to get it right warms my heart and can move me to tears.

Well messi is severely more loved than ronaldo. While messi is the absolute natural gifted talent. Ronaldo is the hard worker (of course still talented) it takes more to be respected by the masses. The first and most important rule: likeability

people also tend to have an unspoken bias against those who work hard, because it subconsciously touches on their own shortcomings. whereas if someone is “naturally gifted”, the listener has more excuses to themselves not achieving enough because of their nature

Ppl are liars. They HATE ppl that put in the work. They admire the lucky because that is "unobtainable", but hardwork is duplicatable, exposing the laziness in the work ethics of others, inspiring envy, and hate.

I’d like to believe the societal narrative of “hard work beats talent” probably played a big role into this. As in everyone knows talent is better, and they perform better. However, it’s one of those facts that they’re not openly willing to admit.

It's important to keep in mind that "natural talent" is largely a myth, designed to minimize the accomplishments of others and allow us an easy off ramp to our own deficiencies. Anyone good at anything worked hard to achieve that.

There is absolutely NO-ONE who has reached the top of their field who falls into “either/or” of these two categories. You don’t get to be John Coltrane or “insert name” just by having innate talent or just by working hard. It’s a multitude of factors- talent, early exposure, natural inclination, support systems, hard work, luck, and so on. So when I listen to Coltrane, I am both in awe of his talent and respect the hard work in his compositions.

Natural talent is such a small factor. Usually it’s just training from a young age

I feel like some people see talented people who perform in their areas as more belonging in those spaces maybe. As because these traits are somewhat inherent its as if they have a sort of claim there

Most naturally gifted people have to work really hard to be at the next level and perfect their craft. It can be biased and imply the gifted person isn’t as smart or hardworking.
