My brain didn't process 60% of the LV5 words because he said "no-MEN-clatúre" instead of "NOMEN-clature" and my brain got hung up on that

Know the audience you’re communicating with. If you’re talking to a child or a laymen, using technical terminology will get you nowhere

I used to be so much worse about this same thing, using words that are too complicated. I try to be better, but my brain likes being precise, so ill automatically try and find the *precise* term, even when the basic one will do. it helps so much to use easy to understand words.

That level 5 and 4 proves a point I once made with my friend is that being smart isn't big words. Being smart is being understood

I kinda gave up on learning bigger words not because I don't like them. but because if they sneak into my vocabulary it becomes harder to communicate. And my philosophy is that communication is for others not for one's self.

At my college one professor had a page/word maximum. His reasoning was if you couldn't explain it within those constraints you didn't understand the subject well enough

They basically beat good communication into us during my Phd program. They emphasized that we are the subject matter experts. It is on us to to meet our audiences where they are. If they do not understand it, it is on us to adjust our communication to meet them.

My mom is a plain language translator at a research hospital. Her job is to essentially take any type of publication that the hospital puts out and rewrite it in the most accessible way to patients and families. I feel like I learned at an early age that if you want to communicate something you had to know your audience. I’m forever bothered by academia and how most scientists and scholars have made there work virtually inaccessible to the layman because they use language that could only be understood by their peers and then wonder why no one cares about their research. 😮‍💨

Absolutely! There are circumstances where certain words convey a whole concept and save you from having to write almost an entire sentence, or they help you be more specific about meaning one thing but not the other (e.g. scientific papers, cooking instructions). . But really outside of that, it's always: why say big word when small word do trick?

I find it hilarious that people in authoritarian positions demand to be heard on their own (often illogical and incorrect) terms while asking you to "dumb it down" for them to understand

Whoa! Ive been trying to tell people that they need to realize communication is a two way street, people can’t read your mind so you need to be able to understand their understanding. Especially if you’re trying to communicate a specific point or message.

Ive always understood at the Lvl 3, but I often have to explain others in caveman speak. I dont have an overly vast vocabulary, I know some big words, but most people dont understand said big words.

I’ve always gone off of “If you don’t have the ability to explain it in a way that a second grader would at least get the gist of it, then you don’t understand it as well as you think you do”

Having a strong vocabulary is a good thing, so long as you know how and when to use the words therein. If you're trying to get a message across, you should speak in a way that the listener will understand. I always think back to watching a video by GradeAUnderA on this exact subject matter. 👍😂
