We had milk back then too in the UK. I remember how full I would feel after a little bottle of milk, I never realised I was hungry. I’m still like this now. I make a cup of tea when really I should eat. Today I ask my children what they want to eat knowing I have the ingredients in the house to make it and honestly it makes me feel like the richest person alive. It fills my heart up cooking for people 🥰

My Appalachian dad grew up so poor that he and his siblings only had biscuits to take to school for lunch. They were ashamed to be seen by the other kids, so they went in woods behind the school to eat. Poverty is such a painful thing, especially for kids.

I was also very food insecure and loved the meals at school. usually ate extra portions just to stay sated throughout the day. children should not have to go through that

That is amazing. During school days I found out my single mom didn’t have allot for retirement—I wanted to go to college—but instead joined the military for 6 years first to save money and to get into a program that would pay for schooling, so all the money my mom saved in the education plan for me she could have for herself when she retires.

My mother did the same thing when she was young she had 9 younger siblings and she took her classmates milk to give to her newborn brother this was in the Kurdistan region back when good food was a luxury,you're not as alone as you think
