Apple is developing "Apple Reference Image," a photo provenance system designed to verify if an image was captured with an iPhone. This feature, referenced in an iOS 27 beta 5 privacy disclosure, is not yet live. The system includes a "Reference" mode in the Camera app. When selected, this mode embeds provenance data into the image's metadata. Key features: • **Authentication**: Images captured in Reference mode can be authenticated to confirm their origin from an iPhone. Tapping a Reference badge sends raw image data, sensor signatures, capture time, and unique hardware identifiers to Apple's Private Cloud Compute (PCC) servers. • **PCC Verification**: PCC uses this information to determine if the camera captured the photo, assigns a unique ID, and returns an authenticated version. • **Privacy**: Apple receives sensor data, a hash, and assessment results during authentication, but not the raw photo itself. • **Security**: Apple can refuse authentication for compromised sensors and retroactively revoke past authentications. Authenticated photos can be viewed on iPhone, iPad, or Mac. This feature, likely aimed at professionals like photographers and journalists, provides hardware-backed evidence of image origin—crucial in an era of AI-generated visuals. While other manufacturers use C2PA Content Credentials, Apple's system appears to serve a similar purpose.
