@instituteofhumananatomy: Cancer doesn't start as a lump. It starts with a single line of DNA going off script. 🔬 Cancer is what happens when abnormal cells grow out of control, and it begins deep inside the cell. Your DNA holds the genes that code for everything a cell does, including two critical instructions: when to divide, and when to undergo apoptosis (controlled, programmed cell death). Normally these are tightly regulated. But when certain genes mutate, that order breaks down and cells start dividing unchecked. The genes that normally drive healthy cell growth are called proto-oncogenes. When they mutate, they become oncogenes, abnormal genes capable of causing cancer. Simple way to remember it: oncogene equals bad mutated gene. Many have been discovered in human cancers. Your defense? Anti-oncogenes, better known as tumor suppressor genes. Think of them as the protective genes, because they suppress those cancer-causing oncogenes before they can do damage. Want to understand how your body really works, system by system? Why not do genetic testing every 5 years in people with family history, or people over 40, and people who have risk factors to detect mutations early? Or instead of furthering chemotherapy develop cirspr to be able to repair mutations that cause cancers to where instead of curing cancer we just prevent it as a whole?
