@morgandebaun: I think AfroTech should be doing a better job matching founders with angels. We have a great app called AfroTech connect but ppl only use it during conference season. Ideas?! #afrotech

I would absolutely consider angel investing especially with black founders if I had some help with due diligence on the companies.

Arlan Hamilton is looking to solve this exact problem and wants to partner to connect these dots. I feel like y’all would get along if you don’t already know each other

My black family office invests in many different companies, from golf to craft beer, to entertainment to luxury cars. Afro tech could do more outreach to bring wealthy black family offices/individuals together. Many of us do not know much abt AfroTech.

Love this conversation and AfroTech is in a great position to carry it forward. I think tactical approach to sharing more about angel investing is necessary but I think wrapping it into the larger context of how capital flows into and through our communities is a great way to ground it.

Thats a very good point. A lot of black professionals who make over 100k a year do not lnow about angel investing and the priviledge iy brings with it. They only get to hear about it after they left the job and no longer high earners to get accredited. They regret for not becoming a “accredited investors”. I think they really need to be educated in. Stocks. Is 0.01 X vs angel investing is 10X type of education

I’ve had investors approach me to vet engineers and prototypes so I would start there. Find a good senior to principal level engineer or architect. Or an adjacent expert depending on the field

No, I am not educated enough. Did it once, made the wrong choice;) more importantly, i need more education around how to structure the deals and it seems like a very long exit.

I think some education around what angel investing entails, how to develop your personal investment ethos while learning investment thesis and different criteria investors use to evaluate businesses would be a game changer. In my experience working with both pre-seed founders and folks looking to invest in the k-12 space (I have a degree in education entrepreneurship & have been an economic decision maker for districts) and have found that both sides of the aisle have uninformed expectations and seem to underestimate how much the investment ethos drives decisions and funding. I’d also add some help in mindsets about wanting a guaranteed ROI. I’ve heard from so many Angel investors that they often expect not to see returns or know it’s a very long long-game

I would love to engage in these types of conversations. I have >13 years experience in data (still a Sr. DE) and launched my Ed-tech company 2 years ago. I’m fully bootstrapped and this side is uncharted territory to me.

Love this conversation! As a founder, I’d love to see what you come up with to help connect early stage founders and angel investors. I’m a lawyer, content creator, and founder of Social Docket, the AI native legal operating system for the creator business.

Need a cultural shift for black wealthy individuals and more visibility with them as a connector (and positioning around the why). It’s much more normal in other wealthy circles to talk about angel investing than I see in our community. Execs, family offices, legacy family enterprises are good options.

Khadijah Robinson comes to mind with Fictive Ventures, and also I would love to explore a partnership with Camelback Ventures. Have a portfolio of over 230+ diverse founders who are primed for angel investment. ✨ Happy to connect!

I prefer to find them organically engaging with things I know well (gaming). Conference attendees skew towards content creators and ppl looking to break into tech these days. Founders who have technical skill sets or fresh ideas investors trust with funding aren’t as easy to find in these spaces as it seems. Even at the pitch competitions it’s a lot of the same ideas (AI wrappers for something).

I joined the BAG Collective to learn and take the next step. If AfroTech had more Operator-to-Investor education, that could be dope. Kind of a “RSUs, now what?” session. See you on 8/16!

I started in startups so I know I’m mostly just giving money away. Even though I’m technically HNW, I don’t feel throw money away HNW yet. I write small 5-10k checks to friends but that’s just friend support; I don’t consider it an investment vehicle.
