However, their broader objective was to weaken Nasser's government and regain influence over the Suez Canal. The conflict became known as the Suez Crisis or the Tripartite Aggression. 7. What Happened During the War? Israeli forces advanced through Sinai, while British and French forces attacked areas around the Suez Canal, particularly Port Said. Egypt resisted the invasion, and Egyptian forces and civilians took part in the resistance, especially in Port Said. At the same time, the United States and the Soviet Union opposed the continuation of the invasion. Britain also faced serious international and economic pressure. Eventually, Britain, France, and Israel were forced to withdraw their forces from Egypt. 8. What Happened to the Canal? After the withdrawal of the invading forces, the Suez Canal remained under Egyptian control and sovereignty. The nationalization became one of the most important symbols of Egyptian independence and resistance to foreign influence.
