the answer is servers could potentially mess w ur food or give u bad service next time you're there if it's a favorite restaurant of yours (and they know you know this) if you dont give them the free money they ask for their extorsion scheme, while McD employees can't mess with your order. That's it, that's why we have to tip one but not the other.

He's right. Waitresses aren't in the back hustling in front of ovens and burners, hustling from the dishpig station to the tables, or even doing prep work. They hang out in the front while workers are doing their thing and the worst complaints they have is their feet hurt and a customer was mean to them. Nothing will make you lose all sympathy for them like being shifted to FoH for a shift because Andrea and Maria were too hungover to show up
