@noluthando.cm: ⚠️ Trigger warning: This post discusses manipulation and emotional abuse. DARVO is a manipulation tactic that can show up in relationships when accountability is raised. DARVO = Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender. It involves denying harmful behaviour, attacking the person raising the concern, and then reversing the roles so that the person being confronted becomes the “victim” and the person raising the concern becomes the “offender.” Knowledge is power here; not because it gives us another label to put on people, but because recognising the pattern can help us understand what is happening in a relationship. And importantly, this awareness goes both ways. We can recognise when DARVO is being used against us, and we can notice when we ourselves are responding this way, whether intentionally or without realising it. The goal isn’t simply to win an argument. It’s to become more capable of accountability, repair and healthier relationships. #DARVO #RelationshipPsychology #EmotionalAbuse #MentalHealthSouthAfrica #clinicalpsychologist

He told me to “get a life” and I told him it was rude and I didn’t like how he spoke to me. Now I’m getting the silent treatment as if I did something wrong🙃.

I think communication dynamics can be very complex, and misunderstandings can happen for many reasons. In any form of union—friendships, relationships or family—respect should always be the first priority, together with genuinely listening to one another.
Sometimes you can raise a concern respectfully, but the other person may already be so emotionally invested in their own perspective that they simply cannot hear or consider another opinion. That’s where concepts like DEVA become interesting, because denial and defensiveness can completely change the way a person receives communication.
For me, raising a concern isn’t about attacking someone; it’s about creating an opportunity for understanding. But both people have to be willing to listen. Acting skills 👌 👏 💯 🤣
