Yesterday I got to witness THREE GROWN MEN who hadn’t seen each other in a little while hanging out together… and honestly it was one of the most WHOLESOME things. 🥹 Within like two minutes of saying hi, they were DEEP into talking about the dinosaurs they have in a video game… which ones they had finally captured, the strategies they use, what skills they unlocked, which creatures are the best… just completely invested in it. And I just sat there smiling…. There was so much genuine joy in that conversation. No stress. No pressure. Just people enjoying something that makes them happy. It actually made me really thankful for my doll community. 💗 Because for SO many years… I didn’t have that. I didn’t have people I could excitedly tell about a new doll, a new outfit, a photoshoot idea, or a baby I had just finished. There wasn’t really anyone to share that excitement with because I was always “the weird one.” The outcast. The girl people thought there had to be something wrong with because I loved dolls. Watching them yesterday made me realize something… Why is one form of play seen as completely normal… and another is seen as strange? And before someone says, “Well, it’s because you treat the dolls like they’re real…” Isn’t that kind of the whole point of pretend? 🤍 Those dinosaur games are designed to feel as real and immersive as possible. Nobody actually has pet dinosaurs. That’s the fun. You get to step into another world for a little while. For me… I can’t have 20 children, even if a part of my heart wishes I could someday. So I collect baby dolls. I create them. I photograph them. I make videos. I imagine little stories. I PLAY. It’s not hurting anyone….It’s just JOY!!! So I’m genuinely curious… Where do we, as a society, decide that one hobby is completely acceptable… but another one suddenly makes someone “weird?” I’m honestly asking because I’d love to hear different perspectives. 💕
