You do realise parents went to school. We know how it works. When my son was at school no homework was checked or marked, I did it myself. So told him to stop doing it.

Does this guy not understand the constant interruptions teachers get in a day? Miss can I go to the toilet, can I get a drink. He’s touching me, can I get my jumper, can I put my jumper in my bag, I need my glasses, I’ve lost my glasses, I feel sick.. I don’t have a pencil. Some kids can take 15 minutes to write a simple sentence. Sports days, school photos, special assemblies, excursions, incursions, music lessons. Kids are sick, kids fight, a kid trashes the classroom, kids aren’t ready to learn because they’ve had a tough morning…. So yes, a teacher may have the kids for six hours per day but a lot happens in that time. If they do work at home it should be to reinforce what they are learning. Reading with your child, practicing times tables etc…

Look I understand this from your point of view however kids do more hours at school than most of my staff do at work. I do the homework because it’s sent home and it helps him but I also understand the videos point. I kind of think this runs into taking kids out of school for holidays which you’ve touched upon already

Tell me Im wrong but also this attitude is the exact reason why some children then don't wanna learn which make the job more difficult and then these parents are the first to say "why is my child behind" 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️

they need to practice having structure, routine and boundaries at home. Home is where they practice, school should be where they perform. but school is practice with no reinforcement at home, school-home disconnect

I’m a big believer in a work life balance even for children they need some down time but at home my kids get taught life skills every day. With that being said as a teacher what do you think is key for children to continue to learn in school holidays? Where they have to much down time and need learning.

I used to teach 16-19 year olds. The amount that not only struggled to read, but also didn't know how to tell the time, use weighing scales, know what weights are, identify fruits and vegetables or how to even cut them up, to use a dustpan and brush or mop a floor or wipe down a side was staggering. It made me so sad that nobody had taken the time with them all those years.

From my experience, parents with this attitude feel inadequate to support their child with their learning and connection to life skills as they themselves don’t feel confident to have mastered it.

I set very creative research homework around the topics, they can present in anyway they like. Models, leaflets, information posters. I never penalise those who don't do it, I always reward those who do. About 80% of my class do their homework & really enjoy it, are, proud to show it off. Alot of parents say they enjoy it & learn alot too. In addition, reading & times tables are a must.

It takes 200 hours of practice to be able to comfortably use a new skill in your everyday life. Over 600 to "Master" it. We get roughly an hour a day to approach each area of the curriculum (if everything goes to plan! No disruptions ", miracle) so you homework and parent practice can determine if your child develops the skill over the course of one school year (roughly 190 days) OR whether it takes them up to three school years to master it. Like it or not, if you aren't practicing at home your child WILL fall behind and take longer to master the same skills as their peers.

Absolutely right . Parents should always be working alongside the teachers . We spent time going through stuff , reading , looking through his school books etc & consolidating his learning . Its also a good way of finding out about stuff that they might be struggling with , before it becomes a bigger issue

My problem with homework is I went to school in the 80's the way I do it isnt the way my 7 year has been taught to do it. I have no clue on the way she is taught and it causes confusion and frustration. We read do day to day math skills - shopping/money change things like that. We also talk about things and work things out together. I do have a huge problem with the crappy worksheets that get sent home with spelling mistakes, awful grammar and the worst maths problems with errors in them. They go straight in the bin.

I had a Y8 student who couldn’t do subtraction or know timetables without a calculator - pretty concerning. Parents do need to do their part in their learning too!
