@katiemcgowanart: I’ve always had an instinct for form and colour, but for years I felt that the paintings I was making didn’t quite reflect the way I saw the world. I could feel exactly what I wanted to communicate, but somehow couldn’t quite translate it onto the canvas. That changed when I stopped resisting what felt most natural to me. I began to focus on shape and form at their smallest scale - allowing each wave to exist as its own fragment. I found that when I gave my attention to each individual movement, the larger composition began to fall naturally into place. There’s something instinctive about painting in waves, too. Perhaps it makes sense that this became my natural language when so much of nature is shaped by the same rhythm: rivers, hills, sand dunes, water carving patterns into rock. Nature is constantly moving, folding and repeating in waves. What once felt like a limitation has become the foundation of my visual language. No longer trying to paint the whole image at once. I follow the movement, one fragment at a time, until the painting reveals itself. #contemporaryart #contemporaryartmovement
