Listen for the ones that praise you for staying convenient: → you are so low maintenance, which often means please keep needing nothing → you are not like other girls, which softly splits you from your own allies → you are so strong, which can mean I am relieved you will not ask me for support → you are so chill, which can mean do not react when I cross a line → you are the only one who gets me, which can mean do not compare notes with anyone else Each one rewards a smaller version of you. The praise lands, you glow for a second, and without noticing you agree to shrink into the shape that earned it. This does not make the speaker a monster. Most people do it without a plan, repeating what once worked on them. Your job is only to hear the instruction hiding under the flattery. Real praise leaves you feeling free to be yourself. Praise with a hook leaves you feeling like you owe a performance. Learn the difference by how your shoulders sit after the words land, not by how sweet they sounded going in. ... The next time a compliment asks you to be less, thank them and keep your full size anyway. Warmth that only rewards your smallness was never really about you.
