Now, divers have found its wreck about 3 miles off the coast of Mazara del Vallo, Sicily, lying 46 metres underwater. And the cargo is extraordinary. 🏺 Hundreds of ancient amphorae are still scattered across the seabed, many remarkably well preserved. The vessels were likely used to transport goods such as wine. Archaeologists believe the ship dates to between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, placing it in the final centuries of the Roman Republic. The discovery could provide new clues about how goods moved across the ancient Mediterranean — and the enormous trading network that connected its shores more than 2,000 years ago.
