Translation: That day of tears, on which shall rise from the ashes the accused man, to be judged. July 16, 1999. Salzburg Cathedral hosts the Berlin Philharmonic to perform Mozart's Requiem, in a memorial concert. Taking the podium is Claudio Abbado, direct successor to Herbert von Karajan at the head of the orchestra since 1990. The date is no coincidence: ten years, to the day, since Karajan's death — in the city where he was born. Abbado was 66. What the audience hears after the first bars is not the completion that made Süssmayr known. In this recording, two other hands finish the Requiem: Franz Beyer and Robert Levin, revising the work behind Süssmayr's work. Even the original commission hides a similar disguise. It was Count Franz von Walsegg who ordered the piece, through an anonymous intermediary, to later sign it as his own — he had that habit. No supernatural mystery: just a count used to wearing other people's words. The film Amadeus turned this patron into a black-caped villain. The documented history is drier — and stands on its own without the film.
