@mommom.maria: Threatening someone with grandparent rights is not the flex you think it is #mommom #motherinlaw #grandparents #adultchildren #nocontact
Grandparent rights are for the family of the deceased parent of the child. like, dad died and mom cuts off a previously established relationship with the pateral side.

Yup! My mom looked clueless after I went full no contact after getting a letter threatening taking me to court. “I was just trying to get your attention”. Oh you got my FULL attention now.

Yes. Grandparent rights are to be used as a tool if the child is in eminent danger as a guardian safety net. But it’s not a tool to threaten. Also……. I have to say that Americans have this modern weird obsession about pushing away their village/community. When I have my child baby, my parents can have them whenever they want….maybe it’s cultural IDK. My family would have access to my baby because they care about her too. But this weird possessiveness about it being my baby so my own parents shouldn’t see it is weird weird weird 👀

I told my dad if he wants access to my kids he has to work on his relationship with me. And then I found out he flew into town to see my son and hang out with my abusive ex. So.

There was a case in AUS where the grandma was seeing her GC several times a week, every holiday, bdays etc, but went to court because she wanted to stop them from relocating interstate (for a huge promotion). She ended up with three supervised hours a month, and as soon as the kid hit a certain age they relocated anyway and cut her off. Karma.

The only time I’ve seen this work is the father was murdered (never found the killer), mother of the kids remarried after two months and then moved away. The father’s parents sued for grandparents rights and won. They got summers and every other Christmas. Then ended up with full custody like two years later when mom went to prison for hiring a Hitman to take out her new husband.

@Erin: My MIL would say this all the time. When we finally went no contact for going in 3 years now. My husband’s aunt told me that she actually called an attorney in our area and they told her there was no chance.

They won’t say anything to me. They try to go through my husband and most recently it was “we just don’t understand why we can’t have access to our grandkids. Other grandparents have all the access they want to their grandkids.” I’m 9 months pregnant and have a 4 year old. They see my 4 year old at least once a week. during my induction my mom pushed her way into my hospital room. I let them know I didn’t want anyone there for at least 2 months before. I ended up having a c section. She never checked on me. Asked how I was. It was just “send Grammy pictures. Grammy needs pictures of her baby everyday”

My MIL is currently doing this to my husband and I because we stopped sleepovers and limited time… 😳 I’ve had to spend thousands on legal letters. Beyond a joke.

i dont even like when people throw this around “jokingly”. just because one has serious boundaries around their children doesnt mean your entitled ass gets to pull that line. talk to us about grandparent rights if the children are neglected or abused, not because you cant see, kiss, or be alone with them.

My mil threatened to do this WHILE I WAS STILL PREGNANT. Kid wasn't even here yet and she was trying to throw court at me. She wonders why our relationship was never really good or why she was not allowed with him alone after he was born.

Regardless of the type of the lawsuit, it’s just common sense to stop directly communicating with someone the moment they threaten you with a suit.

My MIL actually went through with it. Served papers. Brought it to family court. They essentially laid out some things we “should” follow but otherwise said laughed her off. Turns out we all just cut her off for actually going to such extents.

I said it before and I will say it again. Being a grandparent is a privilege not a right.

My ex MiL loved to throw it around and in the dumbest way. I was still married to her son, not even in marriage counseling. I told her our state (TX) wouldn’t grant that unless we were proven unfit, if her son was deceased, or if we were divorced and I was withholding custody. She very confidently told me that she would file in NJ, and then she’d win and I wouldn’t get to see my daughter anymore. All of this was because we told her that she needed to stop showing up unannounced and stop conveniently showing up to everything we were doing like grocery shopping and stop trying to compete for “firsts” like first time to the pool, etc.

My ex-MIL's threats of suing me for grandparent's rights kept me trapped in my abusive relationship with her son so much longer than necessary.

Once words come out of your mouth you can't take them back. You can try to repair in some instances, but the sound of those words coming out of your mouth will never disappear from memory. I've been NC for almost 6 years; it's what I needed, it saved me which by result also saved my family. My child is now old enough to know *some* of the reasons why we don't see the grandparents that live 30 minutes away. Don't say things that will haunt generations.

You’re so lucky your stepfather had a level head on his shoulders about it and was able to settle your mom, but wow what a way to nuke a relationship. I think any grandparent threatening or pursuing grandparent’s rights outside of that very narrow intended set of circumstances is a dangerous person and shouldn’t ever be allowed to spend time with the child again.

IMO-that type of person you describe is a narcissistic matriarch. Lived it with my malignant narcissistic mother and my husbands covert narcissistic mother. The covert narcissist is the one who threatened rights to our eldest and it was simply bc she didn’t like the word NO. 💯💯💯 The malignant one-is the one who hit me in my own home in front of my kids. Mental and physical abuse on both sides. Spotify 💯💯💯 Toxic Grandparents DESTROY marriages.
