Happened at a children’s home I worked at. I told the kid, “I get PAID to take your abuse, but you WILL NOT disrespect your mother!”

Teaching your kids to accept a loveless relationship and abuse is far more damaging than a divorce.

It does affect the children and then they treat their partner like that. I had to unlearn so much

Never ever stay “for the kids” unless you’d want that same relationship for your kids when they grow up. They’re learning what love looks like by watching us.

Oh absolutely. My husband never says anything negative about me to or around our kids EVER. He talks me up when I am not there as well and my boys are so much better for it. I do the same for him and make him coming home a party for the kids everyday. “Look daddy’s home! I’m so happy to see him! Aren’t you!?” And then I give him a kiss and then they run to him and kiss and hug him. We defend one another to the kids as well. For example if my three yr old is yelling at me my husband will say “Hey, don’t talk to my wife like that. She is your mom and you will respect her.” It’s dramatically different to my oldest daughter whose bio dad talks shit about me when she’s with him. Now she thinks it’s okay to be rude to me because of that. I don’t talk poorly about her bio dad to her ever, but I don’t think it matters at this point.

Absolutely. My situation probably isn't typical because I was in an accident last year and lost my leg, but my ex has always been fantastic. Helpful, supportive, positive. We work to stay on good terms and be a team for our son.

100% my parents should’ve gotten divorced a loooong time ago and while it gave me a lil brother who I love it also gave him and is older kids more trauma I’m trying to break that cycle when it come to my relationship but my older sister I unfortunately continuing it it just a horrible streak that’s gotta end sooner rather than later

yes, 100000%. Kids soak that up and will model the behavior the see. never stay together for the kids when one partner is being abusive or disrespectful in front of the kids like its a normal part of a relationship.

I had to unlearn a bonkers amount of abuse my father normalized. Took me ages to realize men aren't supposed to be abused by their partners, and that caretaking your partner's every emotional need, to the point of laying hand on your child, is unhealthy.

When my relationship of 18 years came to the end stretch my baby daddy said we should consider staying together for the sake of our daughter. I told him I'm getting out because of her and that I did not want her to grow up in a loveless relationship.

My daughter is seeing this firsthand and it’s so surreal. She went with her step mom to pick her 13-year-old brother up from practice and he asked his mom why she was wearing what she wore. Sweats and a tank top. Because tank tops are inappropriate to wear in public? She said it was like hearing her father’s words come out of her brother’s mouth.

it absolutely does. I wish id left sooner. it took years of therapy to be ok with my kid. I doubt it will e er be great, because as far as they're concerned Im a maid. they at least recognize that I run this household now, but 10 years of their dad treating me like crap definitely made them think I was crap.

YES. That’s how the cycle of abuse continues. Making a better future means modeling the behavior you want for your kids, including standing up to and leaving abusive partners
