Previously on Lafose Ferewa 2026 FEREWA: THE DEITY OF PRAYER, TESTIMONIES AND TRADITION For generations, the name Ferewa has carried deep significance in the cultural and spiritual history of the Ode Remo people. According to oral accounts gathered from elders and custodians of the tradition, Ferewa is a revered deity believed by devotees to answer prayers, bring solutions to difficult situations, and break what they describe as generational curses. People from different parts of Nigeria, as well as people living abroad, have reportedly made their way back home during the Lafose Festival to witness the traditional appearance, dance and display of Ferewa. At the heart of this ancient tradition is Orita Ejina, a historic square where Ferewa is traditionally said to appear and dance during the Lafose Festival. Every Saturday of Lafose, the atmosphere around Ejina changes. People gather from different communities. Visitors travel long distances. Children, filled with excitement and curiosity, sometimes find their way into the crowd simply because they want to witness the moment when Ferewa comes out to dance. Ferewa's appearance at Ejina is also associated with Agemo, another revered traditional figure known for its distinctive dance and display with an ancient mat. Together, these traditional displays form part of the rich cultural heritage preserved through Lafose. Over the years, countless people have reportedly returned to Ferewa with stories of answered prayers and personal breakthroughs. THE ORIGIN OF FEREWA According to the oral history shared by elders, Ferewa originated from Iraye Remo. The history surrounding Ferewa is closely connected to the relationship and traditional bond between Alaye Ode and Nloku Iraye. According to the accounts passed down through generations, this strong bond and entanglement between the two kings is part of the reason Ferewa is associated with coming out to dance at Ejina during Lafose. PRESERVING THE STORY Much of what is known about Ferewa today has been preserved through oral tradition. The story presented here were gathered through personal interviews and conversations with elders and people who have knowledge of the tradition. Their stories provide a window into a cultural heritage that has survived through generations. In an era where modernization is rapidly changing the way communities remember their past, documenting these stories becomes increasingly important. Ferewa is therefore more than a traditional display. For many, it is a spiritual symbol. For others, it is an important part of Ode Remo history. And for the younger generation, it is a living connection to the traditions of their ancestors. A PERSONAL TESTIMONY OF PRESERVATION This year, I am privileged to use my voice, my camera and my storytelling to introduce this remarkable tradition to a wider audience.
