@twfrogs: The ideal would actually be only a limited number of people would ever be allowed to breed and there would be stricter regulations for owning them, but unfortunately I can't see a way that ever happens. #parrot #exoticpets #parrotbreeder #hybridmacaw #greenscreen
I own a Sun Conure and I love him. Would I recommend? Absolutely not

i think 95% or more of people who own exotic birds/parrots shouldn't own them. the level of care they need is really not understood by the majority of people. and i think the exotic pet trade should be stopped entirely

I used to live with a roommate with multiple parrots. One of the parrots bonded with me instead of her owner. I couldn't take her after I eventually moved out. It hurt so much. Parrots are closer to A MARRIAGE than pet ownership. Don't do it if you can't commit.

i agree with these points completely, people really underestimate the work it takes to look after birds (or most exotic animals). i would be interested to know your opinion on pigeons? im mostly referring to the standard rock doves you see on the street rather than fancy breeds. considering they live in large flocks, how ethical is it to keep them?

I work at a pet store and people don’t even like to hear that goldfish and live for 5 years and geckos can live for 15. They ask me if I’m serious and I’ve been asked “do you think mine will live that long!?!?” No way people can’t handle an animal that can live longer than them

I love parrots and I can't imagine my life without a parrot, but whenever I share my experience owning birds with people and their response is "I want to own a parrot!" I waste ZERO time going into excruciating detail about why they don't actually want a parrot because it's a full lifestyle change. It's not like adopting a cat or dog on a whim one day, there's SO much that goes into bird husbandry that the average person is absolutely not prepared to deal with!!

i work at a petstore and people complain about the price of our parrots all the time like theyre hundreds of dollars because they live basically the same lifespan as us we dont want anyone to walk in and buy one 💔

I have a snake as a pet and I don’t think most people should have reptiles. Honestly most people shouldn’t have animals in general

the speed with which I yell "ABSOLUTELY NOT" when someone (it's always someone who doesn't even have pets) says they want a bird
and I'm not even a bird owner, just someone who has learned about them enough to know that going to bird sanctuaries and watching bird comp videos is more than enough for 99% of people

I agree, parrots should not be and do not make good pets. Before I got parrots I always told people who had parrots that I really wanted one and never understood why without fail, they all said "No you don't." I understand it now, but I'm lucky to have the time and resources to care for a bird that otherwise could go to a home that doesn't know anything about it. I love my bird's, I will always have them, but they should not be pets.

One could say this also applies to human children, most people who have children SHOULD NOT have them

Having pets that could naturally outlive me is a total no-go for me. My husband and I don’t want kids, so it’s even less likely we’d have someone who would already know them/want them when we pass. I’m a cat person and that’s already a long commitment itself! I have a 16 year old I’ve had since I was 16.

i went to a parrot rescue open house recently, i met a green cheek conure who wasn’t even a year old yet. it absolutely broke my heart that she’s already been given up. i’ve had friends who’ve asked me “do you think a parrot would be good for me” and i always tell them “nope, probably not”

Birds should not be pets period. They can’t properly fly unless they are in the wild. The ones that are kept as pets are so incredibly social that they end up self mutilating because they don’t get enough social interaction. Their erogenous zones are where people naturally want to pet them and it ends up frustrating them so they become aggressive. Along with all of the reasons you listed. And I truly believe all exotic animals should not be pets. Only .01% of the population can actually properly care for them. If it’s not domesticated, it shouldn’t be a pet

It's so sad that birds are treated the way they are. Our first sun conure was 3 yrs old when we got him and we were his 4th home. He had a lot of aggression issues and didn't even know how to fly. We had him for 6 years until he passed in a freak accident. We brought home our current sun conure early 2020 when he was only 6 months old, and we are his second home.

Another long lived animal people shouldn't have is turtles. ESPECIALLY tortoises. Nobody should be able to breed and sell turtles and tortoises.

thank you for this. my disabled son desperately wants a bird and I keep telling him no. I feel bad but we wouldn't be a good home for a bird and these videos help confirm that for me so I feel less bad😅

We NEED a tiger king/God of Monsters doc to bring attention to this and actually have regulations enforced. My birds are literal toddlers😭 they have their own bedroom, there are live trees in the room with special lighting installed for the plants and birds health. I work from home and they get to have me around all day. 2 hours of my day is spent cleaning up after them. I have only stainless steel cookware, I have will that specifically includes what happens with them with money allocated for their care. I’m not less than $20,000 into make my birds life as good as possible and they’re still getting cheated out of the life they SHOULD have. Stopppp getting birds🥲

thank you for this video! i own a 41 year old parrot and i manage the care of 250+ parrots professionally. parrots are not pets, parrots are wildlife in crisis, and the illegal trade and excessive breeding needs to be stopped!
