For everyone saying “she only did it to make herself feel better” yes. That’s the entire point of the novel. She even says in her final monologue: “ How can a novelist achieve atonement when, with her absolute power of deciding outcomes, she is also God? There is no one, no entity or higher form that she can appeal to, or be reconciled with, or that can forgive her. There is nothing outside her. In her imagination she has set the limits and the terms. No atonement for God, or novelists, even if they are atheists. It was always an impossible task, and that was precisely the point. The attempt was all.” The entire novel is about how some actions can never be reversed, we must live with what we choose to do.

I hated this bitch so much that when I read the chapter exposing that I threw the book across the room and didn’t finish the last chapter or two for another three weeks. Such a testament to the authors writing that I was THAT upset.

People who hate Briony I fear do not understand this novel. The point is that emobodies what many of us could have been. The things we do in childhood, adolescence, adult hood—so long as it is “done”, we cannot change it. We continue to justify, self soothe, and attempt to atone not for others but for ourselves to live another day. I think the only way to understand Briony is to go through similar feelings of regret

She was a child. Children’s perception of reality is different. And children are more selfish in an naive way. You can’t blame a child who couldn’t understand the potential consequenses of her action. Children live in the moment. They should still have moral yes; and I’m sure she would have never done it if she had understood.

Among MANY things about Briony, I truly resent her having said the “final act of kindness” and that she “gave them their happiness” which is obviously so self righteous but also the fact that it’s been DECADES and she’s still trying to convince herself that this is part of the atonement when really it’s just her trying to make herself feel better about it all
