My son just “graduated” from preschool. He learned Spanish and Mandarin, and took music classes in Spanish and Mandarin. I can’t do any of that. He’s also made amazing friends and learned social skills I would have struggled with at home. Maybe other people are just better at all this than me, but I could never provide 1/2 the education he was getting just at the preschool level. And I have a law degree and have taught adult law students. Teaching children is just a whole different thing as far as I’m concerned.

my kids each went into daycare full time at 6 weeks ago. Both went to public education school through high school. Both got advanced degrees (John Hopkins and Northwestern.) Upstanding adults with great jobs and return to their community. I give all the credit in the world to American PUBLIC EDUCATION with the excellent and highly underpaid teachers with the success the my kids now have.

I unschooled (aligned with secular /humanist/decolonization) for awhile and it was amazing. Ultimately, he decided to rejoin public school for high school. Our entire family benefited so much from that experience and continue to do so. I am a degreed/experienced professor, who researched thoroughly how to best homeschool and I SILL wasn’t sure I was skilled enough to homeschool/unschool well.

How do these people not understand that they are setting their children up for failure as adults? I also don't understand why so many states have zero oversight where homeschooling is concerned including my own state of Texas. Homeschooling can absolutely be done well. I have friends who did it for several years because their children had disabilities that were particularly impactful when the kids were young. The mom was basically the homeschool teacher full-time, and she has a masters degree in architecture. She works so hard to put together excellent curriculum for her children. However, as the children got older and they started to explore co-ops to improve the quality of the education their kids were getting, they started running into an issue. So many other people in the co-ops were heavily religious, and my friends felt that many of the people set to teach certain classes were nowhere near qualified to do so. They eventually decided to move to private school because they recognized they were unable to provide an adequate education.

My mom was one of the OG unschooling parents in the 90s. Unschooling has changed A LOT since its conception. Even though my mom worked HARD to do unschooling right (building her own curriculum from our interests)… I was still behind when I got to high school. I’m in my 40s now and only recently realized I would have been a much better student in college if I hadn’t been fighting against my hole-y education… I knew a lot about specific things, but I didn’t have the broad general education of my peers. It took far too long to learn critical thinking skills in my adult life. I don’t endorse homeschooling at all, even though I have my masters degree as a former homeschooler.

2 friends and I were just talking about this. I don’t know why I thought, and my one friend, that home schoolers had to follow a curriculum around what their district or state followed. Seems we were seriously wrong.

There is so much backlash against unschooling right now, but personally I find them much more on track with their schooled counterparts than the Christian homeschoolers. Especially socially.

My kid is going into high school in 2 weeks and he’s asking for home school. He gets special education at public school, reads at a 4th grade level and never reads for pleasure. I don’t know how to “hold him accountable” for learning. I think he will play Roblox and watch videos all day while I am at work.

I am a multilingual teacher at an elementary school with an immigrant majority. I sent my son, who is black, to a Montessori school thru middle school. We couldn't find a high school that worked for him nHe is in online school, just trying to get his degree. He feels like he doesn't fit into the system and frankly hates school. I do believe in public education, but feel like the system doesn't work for all students.

We are starting our 2nd year of homeschooling and it’s been shocking to find why and how others are homeschooling. We use a charter school to make sure we are following guidelines and not leaving my child behind. I love that we can deep dive into his curiosity but I want to be sure it’s not creating a deficit in another subject

I applaud your stance regarding more regulation of homeschooling. Fact is 27-30 states have zero requirements for graduation nor any type of standardized tests for graduation. Only 9 require both in some form or another.

I think a big portion of the difference is how well you articulate yourself in what it is that you prioritize in educating your children versus their take on what homeschooling should be. These are the same people that talk a lot about indoctrinating our kids in public schools yet what they’re explaining from how they decide to educate their children in homeschooling is the actual definition of indoctrination. I applaud you for taking care and concern on your approach to homeschooling.

My Mormon younger siblings were homeschooled.... but they were more like you. The decision to homeschool only came after their elementary school pulled all curriculum besides English and Math. Something about test scores 🙄🙄 No science. No music. No History. My Mom looked at that and said "NOPE!" and pulled the 2 youngest to homeschool. Religion classes weren't involved in classwork- they kept those to regularly attended church meetings. My brother's favorite subject was science. They did co-ops, scouts, team sports, and tons of travel. They did community theater. They had activities with kids of all ages. They both graduated, took the GED, went to college. Homeschooling CAN work well. But it can also be the perfect breeding grounds for neglect and indoctrination. That needs addressed.
