The ONLY things that I side eye for this ship are when people make Simon uneducated to a non-canon degree just so Grace can teach him (like writing Simon as illiterate), or make him angry/aggressive in a non-canon way that is usually also paired with an equally non-canonically passive and uwu Grace. Those always feel mad weird to me

I've seen some complaining that Simon wouldn't touch religion with a 10 foot pole after all that, but I'm afraid it simply would NOT be that easy. I doubt the COI had a robust deprogramming prison center for ex-Eden members. He probably wouldn't hold most of their beliefs anymore (whatever those are), but... he's definitely still got them in his head somewhere. Like, I didn't even regularly go to church growing up and I reflexively use Christian swears despite being agnostic. Formative years are "formative" for a reason.

Also I put this in a tumblr post and I’ll repeat it here: just because Grace is white does not make it a “white savior complex” a white savior complex is if Simon saw Grace as an Angel because Grace is white. It would be a white savior complex if Grace saw himself as helping someone of color. Those are white saviors. The best example is the freedom writers (white teacher who sees herself as great for helping poor children of color).

idk I think the only complaint people have that I think is super fair when you just don't like crossovers, it's incredibly popular and it can sometimes feel that it detracts from both of the original stories. But it's kind of a nothing burger, type of thing that is still easy to exclude if not your cup of tea, which for me it isn't.

Honestly, any OOC quality can work if the writer is makes a good enough case for it within the specific story. Every fanfic is its own universe. Every person is going to interpret them differently. If you(people complaining) don’t like how one person does it, don’t read their work. If you don’t like how anyone does it, do it yourself.

I thought Simon didnt fuck with the religion? And did their religion have angels? Cause I thought it was heavy on the tree stuff (genuine question, I watched the movie, I'm just not fully up on the lore). I also have absolutely no hate towards people and their headcanons cause- this ship is LITERALLY fiction-squared, it's a made up ship within two fandoms that are not connected. I personally just enjoy a lot of content that is not in the mainstream typically. Like I personally do not like aggressive Simon due to his overly apologetic nature and his natural instinct to defend himself because of how people treated him in the movie. And on the opposite end, I really like rude or competitive Grace personally, since from the bits of the book Ive seen and the full movie, we know that Grace proudly claims to be the person that will challenge and trigger others when talking with Eva to prove he should keep the samples, and how annoyed he got with Rocky moving in (and I think comparing Rocky to his ex in the book?), and how angry he got in the book when he got his memories back on how he got on that ship. Even in the movie, it shows directly that Grace has a really complex and interesting pull to not go back to earth, and even when given the chance to go back, you can tell he is conflicted with humanity and going back, and I really like writing that complexity with Grace and how he views humans after the movie, I think its really cool exploring the greyness of his character. But I also still enjoy and respect people who write Grace as a soft boy and Simon as this tough guy. I just dont like when either side is hating on the other, since its all up for fun and interpretation at the end of the day. That's the point. (Also, Grace is the pet to Rocky, and I will not play with this, lol xDDD)

The white savior discussion had a genuine place at the table at first. Because there was a trend of Grace being like. The sole intelligence in the narrative. Like He’d show Simon how to do everything and learn everything which overshadows Simon’s own abilities and intelligence. But it’s devolved into a dogwhistle to “make sure ur not mistreating Simon cuz yknow he’s not white actually and Grace is SO white so we have to be so careful we’re not being racist of course!!!” And it went full circle into almost feeling racist itself because now that’s the lens they’re forcing onto every pre-discussion of Simon’s character 🤦♀️

People are getting weird about the fact its Grace saving Simon lately and its like. Yes? because one of them came out of their movies with a sick little house on a beach and the other exploded into a tree. One had a definitive "happy" ending! Theres a good handful of "Grace in IL" too i've seen, but theres so much good content in the idea of Simon getting a chance to finally rest and be safe(ish, dpending on the fic). Its just the nature of their genres! If it was swapped, Simon would be bringing Grace to the biodome! It's a matter of who has the resources to help the other, and Simon's resources were just as low as his survival rate

admittedly I havent actually seen iron lung (not a horror fan 😭😭) but even if i hadnt figured out that Simon was from a religious cult, the angel thing also makes sense on the PHM side because its literally a dude named GRACE on a ship called the HAIL MARY
