@travellerau: Opinion: Traveller columnist @bengroundwater says he avoided using a hard suitcase for the longest time, as it felt like an admission that he’d aged out of backpacking into one of those tourists who stays in big chain hotels and does open-top bus tours. But after getting a behind-the-scenes tour of Canberra Airport, he’s very glad he made the switch from soft luggage. “‘Have you ever seen a kicker before?’ one of the staff members asks me, grinning. ’Trust me, you will never pack glass bottles in your bags again,’” he writes. #luggage #travel #traveller #suitcase

Soft sided suitcases are more likely to survive those kicks… 😅

So when they slap a fragile stick on my suitcase it does nothing?

I assume soft-sided bags will fare better in airports with kickers than the those made of cheap hard plastic

Soft side is more durable against kickers. It’s only an issue if there’s breakables inside

For all those arguing soft vs hard cases, there are tons of legitimate travel luggage reviews. Most state that soft luggage holds up better than hard that has a tendency to Crack and when it does is garbage.

I've only ever seen hard case suitcases split on and the contents come out at baggage collection. never a soft case.

what a stupid contraption, it's not cheap to fly and your belongings should be treated with greater care. I said what I said.

So a fully packed soft sided one should take the kick better than a loosely packed one for the items inside... lucky I don't pack lightly lol

I’ve had hard sided suitcases effed up by kickers when travelling. Stuff inside was safe but the suitcase was unusable afterwards

My soft sided bags have lasted for longer than multiple hard sided ones my friends and family have used in the same time frame, including multiple checking through international airports.

this is crazy. the area and tool should be cushioned at least to prevent cracking etc.

Ummmm how is this not common knowledge? Most people have seen luggage chucked around by handlers. If you put fragile items in checked in luggage, then you potentially FAFO

And yes - airlines/airports ARE responsible for damage to your bag, no matter how much they say they aren’t.

Explains why the pull up handle on my bag was broken on my last trip. I had to bend over to drag the bag by its carrying handle.

Anyone that packs anything fragile in their suitcase and doesnt put it in the middle of the bag, using clothing to 'protect it' would be silly. I know of too many hard shell bags that haven't survived the force/kickers/drops etc, with edges being pushed in, completely smashed, wheels being pushed in and broken etc. Soft shell all the way.
