@ellenwitharthritis: Your ability to tolerate pain is a skill that benefits everyone but you. There is no one else that can feel what you feel. You are your only advocate. You were deserving of help then, you’re still deserving now. No matter how many years have passed. No matter how much you’ve changed. Accepting help for pain is not a moral failure, it’s a neutral decision that allows you to keep going as a whole person.
On one hand, it benefits everyone but me that I’ve gotten so good at handling it. On the other hand, I know I’m so much stronger than before and stronger than most other people who don’t carry this much. It makes me brave but careful. I know I can handle anything I’m thrown- if I’m smart enough to plan ahead.

Same—and rating pain as a 5 is preventing drs from taking it seriously. So I switched to using this descriptive scale by OHSU. I hope it helps me with drs.

When my rheumatologist asked me I told him I didn’t know. He said, you don’t know if you’re in pain? I replied, I’m always in pain so it’s normal for me so I can’t really give you a number. He looked at me like I was stupid.

I absolutely hate when doctors ask me to rate my pain level. I’ve had to learn to live with pain. My 5, may be someone else’s 10. There are some mornings I cannot function at all. The pain can be debilitating, if I’d tell them the truth they would listen anyway

I once had such a bad flare EMS thought I was OD'ing and i have no memory of the event besides of the panic and waking up a day later. Me getting my braces tightened is at the same level now and my joints ache in a way that others would consider as bad as a fire.

Yes! It’s so hard to tell when I’m in a flare versus just my baseline.

I hate being asked what number my pain is because I’ve had a chemical meningitis. Like nothing compares to that but it doesn’t mean my pain isn’t bad 🥲

When I was in the hospital with appendicitis I was a 9, but that same level of pain is below by baseline of 4 now.

I've gotten to the point where I don't use numbers really anymore I describe what it feels like physically like sometimes it's like I got hit in the gut with a baseball bat (I will always differentiate which kind because it feels different) or sometimes it's like someone is stabbing my hand with 100 needles both I would rate a 4-5 at this point in my life because I know it can be worse, but if I say that to a doctor they don't think it's that bad so I just skip the numbers because they feel arbitrary and pointless at this point

Honestly I fractured my knee age 8-9 thought damn this will be the worst pain I feel right my on off pain meds due to reactions after back surgery was less pain then the worst migraine pots flare mix like part of my deciding to explain the pain to the doctor was I'd rather do that over bladder spasms and all then have this migraine pots flare

RA pain genuinely feels like someone smashed your hand with a hammer and broke all the bones and you have to rawdog the pain of broken bones swelling stiffness and heat and inflammation for days. its relentless its excruciating and your fully debilitated and like when you have to deal with that for months or years, its not that it gets easier you have to learn to tolerate it. its like a form of torture

This is so accurate bc my pain has increased so exponentially that I’d do anything to go back to that pain level.

the pain that finally sent me to urgent care 2 years ago is now the pain I feel daily. the pain that sent me to urgent care 2 weeks ago was so bad I was nothing but a ball of rage in the waiting room. the doctor took one look at me and said I believe you and I started sobbing as soon as she walked out of the room.
