Thank you for sharing this. ❤️I don’t think people talk enough about this side of rescue, and so much of what you said hit home for me.
I foster and volunteer with multiple rescues, and I also help with dogs on the euthanasia list. I have my own animals, kids, a full-time job, and a life outside of rescue but somehow rescue has a way of taking up so much of your heart and your head. There are days when I’m coordinating fosters, screening applications, networking dogs, worrying about deadlines, bringing another dog into my home, or trying to figure out how to help a dog I know I personally can’t save.
And the emotional part can be exhausting. You see dogs with only hours or days left, and even when you do everything you possibly can, sometimes the outcome is completely outside of your control. Yet you still carry it with you. Then there’s the pressure of wondering if you’re doing enough, worrying about what other people will think, and feeling guilty when you need to say no or take a step back.
I’ve had to remind myself lately that I can love these dogs with my whole heart without being able to save every single one of them. I started doing this because I genuinely love animals and wanted to help, and I never want the pressure, politics, opinions, or chaos of rescue to take that away from me.
So truly, thank you for being vulnerable enough to say this out loud. It made me feel a lot less alone in feelings I’ve been struggling with myself lately. ❤️At the end of the day, we keep showing up because of the dogs. 🐾
