Most swimmers who track SWOLF assume a lower number always means better technique. It can be manipulated in seconds without any real improvement, and most swimmers doing this have no idea they’re doing it. SWOLF combines your stroke count and your time for one length into a single number. Fewer strokes plus a faster time gives you a lower score, and that’s a fair reflection of real improvement when it happens naturally. But your stroke count can also drop instantly just by gliding longer between strokes. The number improves. Nothing about your actual stroke changed. This matters because the two versions feel almost identical but train completely differently. A low stroke count earned through a clean catch and strong pull carries over into faster swimming. A low stroke count earned by pausing longer between strokes builds a habit with a dead spot in every cycle, one that gets worse the moment fatigue or race conditions show up. The most honest way to use SWOLF is at a fixed tempo. Set a tempo trainer, hold your stroke rate steady, and then work on lowering your count within that constraint. Any improvement under those conditions is real, because the glide has been taken out of the equation and your technique has to do the actual work. A lower SWOLF only means something if your tempo stayed the same. Otherwise you just paused longer between strokes. Do you track SWOLF? Have you ever checked if your tempo changed along with it? Tell me in the comments.
