Puffed quinoa! 🌾 I get asked often how I’ve learned to do what I share. I’m one of those people who think, ‘it can’t be that hard!’ about EVERYTHING! When it comes to something that requires the result to be exactly correct I’ll read up on it- for example canning is an exact science based on pH, temperature, and mitigating bacterial growth. It’s not a skill that I’ll just decide to figure out on my own. But most things are just trial and error! I’ll fail again and again and troubleshoot until I get whatever the task is correct- from building my chicken coop to popping quinoa! For example, this popped quinoa. I knew from cooking quinoa that it puffs like rice in a rice cooker. Rice can be dry-puffed like popcorn, so if I apply that thought to quinoa my brain says ‘it can be air popped!’ I added quinoa to my air popper and disaster- the grain is too light and went EVERYWHERE. 😂 So next I tried with a high heat in a pan, and while the quinoa did pop, it also burnt ridiculously quickly. So I thought I’d try oil to give it some protection before it burnt and that ended up being a soggy mess, both on the stove and in the microwave. Finally I lowered the heat and decided to shake instead of stir to agitate the grains into popping and it worked perfectly! Not being afraid to fail and thinking logically about how to change one variable at a time leads to learning, and in this case great food! #quinoa #lowwaste #Sustainability #slowliving #vegan #Recipe #saladideas #learningprocess #urbanhomestead #denver
