Hi! I’m a 3rd year optometry student and I also have UC too (also taking mesalamine). Our eyes and gut are connected. IBD can absolutely cause irritation in the eyes and trigger dry eye. I too have been experiencing more dry eye symptoms since being diagnosed. What I recommend to my patients and what I do myself is I use a bruder mask once a day (can find one on Amazon) and use preservative free artificial tears 3x a day. Also it’s hard to tell from the video but if you are also a contact lens wearer I recommend you reduce your contact lens wear time significantly while you do the aforementioned. That should help calm the irritation! :) hope this helps a little

yes it can cause inflammation in eyes and very severe dry eye disease and mgd please see a dry eye specialist not normal eye dr

UC can absolutely cause inflammation affecting the eyes, it’s not just a theory. It can also affect joints, skin, etc. My IBD team asks me about all that at every appointment.

I learned more than 20 years into having UC and lots of issues with my eye thinking that I had chronic pinkeye (always the same eye) and finally a doctor told me that UC causes eye issues. Had no idea

Make sure you see an Ophthalmologist over an Optometrist if you think you UC is causing eye issues

This happened to me before during a really bad UC flare, and it went away once I started medication and the inflammation went down Before I knew it was related to UC, I also went to an eye doctor, but they couldn’t find the problem and told me that i’m fine

That’s why you have to be the CEO of your health in the west. Docs will treat the symptoms with pharma, which can be lifesaving and be amazing, but isn’t a holistic approach to be as healthy as you can be. Unfortunately, No one will care as much as you, so have to build the team and manage them
