4 Movements for a Healthy Spine 👀 Your spine isn’t meant to move in just one way. It’s designed to flex, extend, rotate, side-bend, articulate, and stabilize — every day, for life. ⬇️ But modern life often asks the spine to live in just one direction, especially flexion from sitting. When the spine doesn’t regularly experience its full range of movement, stiffness and tension can build. 🧠 Then when you suddenly reach, twist, or bend sideways, the body may react with guarding or spasm — not because something is “wrong,” but because the movement is unfamiliar. 🦋 These four simple movements reintroduce your spine to the directions it’s designed for. 🔑 They restore natural motion, support nervous system regulation, and help your back stay resilient for yoga, training, and daily life. Move slowly, breathe deeply, and focus on quality over range. 🙈 A healthy spine isn’t built by forcing flexibility — it’s built through consistent, intelligent movement in all directions. 🪷 Try each movement for about 30-60 seconds for 1-3 sets. ⚠️ Stop if you feel pain or dizziness. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting a new exercise program. 🔹 1. Seated Side Bend — Lateral Flexion Sit tall with hips grounded and spine long. Reach both arms overhead, then exhale to side bend, lengthening evenly through both sides of the waist rather than collapsing. Inhale to return to center, then switch sides. Keep the chest open, shoulders relaxed, and weight balanced through both sitting bones. Think lift first, then bend—creating space between each rib as you move. 🔹 2. Rolling Cat–Cow (Flexion/Extension with Articulation) Start in tabletop with hands under shoulders and knees under hips. On an exhale, initiate from the tailbone and slowly round the spine one vertebra at a time, letting the movement ripple up through the mid-back and neck. On the inhale, reverse the wave—tail lifts, belly softens, chest broadens, and the spine returns to gentle extension. Move slowly, articulating each segment rather than collapsing into end ranges. Keep weight evenly distributed through hands and knees, ribs drawn in for support, and breath guiding the rhythm. Focus on smooth, controlled motion rather than depth. 🔹 3. Thread the Needle — Spinal Rotation Start in tabletop with hands under shoulders and knees under hips. Inhale to reach one arm up, rotating through the upper back. Exhale to thread that arm underneath the chest, rotating while keeping hips stacked over the knees. Press lightly through the supporting hand, keep the neck relaxed, and let the twist come from the spine rather than forcing the shoulder. 🔹 4. Balancing Table — Spinal Stability Start in tabletop with hands under shoulders and knees under hips. Draw one knee in toward the chest, rounding slightly to find core connection, then extend the leg back while keeping the spine long and steady. Hips stay level, ribs gently engaged, and gaze down to maintain a neutral neck. Focus on control and balance rather than height. #yoga #mobility #stretching #workoutmotivation #motivation
