It was also essentially a long, single, serpentine aisle.
One way in, one way out, forcing every customer along the same path, passing by every product.

No but seriously the history of the shopping is fascinating!!!!!
Ask him if he knows about the Sears catalog giving Black people a safe way to shop during segregation? Either he's gonna teach me something I don't know or find a new rabbit hole 😁

So in a strange way, self checkout is an evolution of the same "You do the shopkeepers job for them" mentality 🤔

For the baskets or shopping carts (can't remember which one), I recall reading the store owner hired actors to pretend to be customers and use them around the store, to basically teach the real customers how to use them.
Getting customers to buy more.

The Pink Palace natural history museum in Memphis is actually the old mansion of the Piggly Wiggly founder, and it includes a model of one of the original Piggly Wiggly’s with period prices!!

There actually are a few Piggly wigglies still left in Tennessee. I remember when I was really little back in the '90s when there were more before they were bought out by another grocery chain
