History gives us important examples from Uganda. Alice Lakwena, Joseph Kony, and Joseph Kibwetere all led movements that used Christian language or claimed a Christian religious basis, although their teachings and practices were outside mainstream Christianity. Alice Lakwena led the Holy Spirit Movement, a movement combining Christian beliefs with traditional spiritual ideas. Thousands of people died during the 1986–1987 rebellion, although there is no reliable figure showing how many people Alice personally killed. Joseph Kony later led the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and claimed that the movement was guided by the Holy Spirit and sought to establish a society based on the Ten Commandments. The wider LRA conflict is estimated to have caused around 100,000 deaths, although this is a conflict-wide estimate and should not be presented as the number Kony personally killed. Joseph Kibwetere was associated with the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God, a Christian-influenced apocalyptic movement. At least 778 people died in the Kanungu tragedy and related incidents in 2000. The lesson is not that Christianity itself is responsible for these crimes. Rather, it is that religious language can be used by individuals and movements to justify political violence or extreme actions, and those individuals should be held responsible for what they actually did. Therefore, when discussing terrorism or religiously motivated violence, we should apply the same standard to everyone. A criminal should not be labelled according to an entire religion simply because he claims to belong to that religion. Muslims should not automatically be represented as terrorists because a terrorist claims Islam, just as crimes committed by people claiming Christianity should not automatically be attributed to Christianity. Judge the individual and the organization by their actions—not millions of innocent believers by the crimes of a few.😂😁
