The Jesus most people recognize from Western paintings probably doesn’t resemble the historical Jesus very closely. Jesus was a first-century Jewish man from Galilee, born in Bethlehem and raised in Nazareth. By the fourth century, artists increasingly portrayed him with long hair and a beard, drawing partly from existing Greco-Roman artistic traditions. Different Christian cultures subsequently portrayed Christ in ways familiar to their own communities. (HISTORY) European artists eventually produced European-looking versions. African Christians produced African-looking versions. And Christians across the Middle East and Asia developed their own visual traditions. What is historically certain is that Jesus was executed by Roman authority under Pontius Pilate, and European colonial societies centuries later sometimes used Christianity and European religious imagery within systems of conquest and slavery.
