Volkswagen 4MOTION works by automatically controlling how much engine power goes to the front and rear wheels. The exact setup depends on the VW model, but many transverse-engine VW cars use a Haldex-type system. When driving normally with good traction, the car can send most of the power to the front wheels. Sensors constantly monitor things such as wheel speed, throttle position, steering angle, engine torque and whether the wheels are starting to slip. If the system detects that the front wheels are losing traction, an electronically controlled hydraulic clutch starts engaging. This connects the front drivetrain to the rear differential and transfers more torque to the rear wheels. The amount of torque isn't simply fixed—it can be continuously adjusted depending on what the car needs. For example, if you accelerate hard on a wet road and the front wheels start slipping, the system can increase the pressure on the clutch, sending more power toward the rear wheels. Once traction improves, it can reduce the amount of torque going to the rear. The AWD system also works together with ABS and ESC. If one wheel starts spinning excessively, the car can brake that individual wheel while the drivetrain system adjusts the torque distribution.
