A tornado touched down in Atlantic Beach, Long Island, on Thursday, August 20, 2026, after a waterspout moved toward shore from the Atlantic Ocean. The National Weather Service confirmed it was an EF-1 tornado, with estimated peak winds of 97 mph. The tornado was on the ground for roughly 3 minutes, from approximately 6:47 PM to 6:50 PM, traveling about 0.36 miles with a maximum width of roughly 100 yards. The storm caused moderate to major damage to nearly 50 beach bungalows and storage units, along with decking and railings. Nearly 30 vehicles had window damage, and about 30 yards of sand fencing were destroyed. The NWS says the circulation likely traveled along the southeastern Rockaways before crossing the East Rockaway Inlet and coming ashore at the western end of Atlantic Beach. Fortunately, the NWS reported no fatalities or injuries from the confirmed tornado. And this wasn't just a normal summer thunderstorm. The broader storm system produced severe weather, flooding and dangerous conditions across the NYC region, including significant flooding in Queens and other parts of the Tri-State area. So when you see videos calling this a “Brooklyn tornado,” the bigger story is the Rockaways–Atlantic Beach tornado event and how unusual it is to have a confirmed tornado so close to New York City. 🌪️ EF-1 tornado. 97 MPH winds.
