Adjust the angle to find the oval or bean-shaped structure 🎯. The right kidney is often located behind the liver (more cranial) ⬆️, while the left kidney is more mobile (often moves with breathing) 🌊. Always compare both sides for best results ✅! 👀 What Do We Look For? ❶ 📏 Size & Shape: Are they symmetrical? Are the outlines smooth? ❷ 🧬 Cortex & Medulla: Is the corticomedullary junction clear? Is cortical echogenicity normal (should NOT be brighter than the liver or spleen) ❓ ❸ 🫗 Collecting System: Is the renal pelvis dilated, hydronephrotic, or containing stones? Any abnormal cysts or masses 🪨? 💡 Tip: For kidney scanning, patience = clarity 🧘‍♀️! Recommend lateral or sternal recumbency 🛌, with clipped hair 💇‍♂️ and plenty of coupling gel 💧.
