While it comes from a good place, it’s actually not something they naturally enjoy. Their feathers are incredibly specialised. Constant handling and stroking can damage the delicate feather structure & the oils & acids naturally present on our skin can affect feather condition over time. Healthy feathers are essential, they’re a bird’s insulation, waterproofing, camouflage & for many species, their ability to fly. So how do birds of prey show affection? In the wild, bonded pairs & close family members perform allopreening, gently preening one another, especially around the head and neck. These are the areas a bird can’t easily reach itself. It’s a behaviour that strengthens social bonds, builds trust & helps keep each other’s feathers in good condition. When one of my birds gently nibbles at my hair or tries to preen my head, that’s much closer to how they naturally express trust than being stroked by human hands. The greatest act of love we can give these incredible animals isn’t cuddles, it’s respecting their natural behaviour & understanding them for who they are.
