Tokyo Ghoul is a Japanese dark fantasy and horror manga series written and illustrated by Sui Ishida. It was originally serialized in Weekly Young Jump from 2011 to 2014 and later expanded with a continuation titled Tokyo Ghoul:re. The story is set in an alternate version of modern-day Tokyo where creatures called Ghouls live hidden among humans. These ghouls look almost identical to normal people, but they can only survive by eating human flesh. Because of this, society fears them, hunts them, and tries to control their existence through a government organization known as the CCG (Commission of Counter Ghoul). The central plot follows Ken Kaneki, an ordinary and introverted college student whose life drastically changes after a near-fatal encounter with a ghoul. When he undergoes an emergency operation, he unknowingly receives ghoul organs, turning him into a half-ghoul. From that point on, Kaneki is trapped between two worlds: the human world he still emotionally belongs to and the ghoul world he is physically forced to become part of. This internal conflict becomes one of the major themes of the series, exploring identity, fear, trauma, and what it truly means to be “human.” The manga is known for its intense psychological depth, unpredictable plot, and brutal, graphic action. It portrays how both humans and ghouls can be cruel, compassionate, broken, and complex. There are no simple heroes or villains—only individuals trying to survive their traumas and beliefs.
