One thing I'd add is that shows like To Catch a Predator may have warped what “taking child abuse seriously” looks like. A dramatic sting, confrontation and arrest is incredibly visible and emotionally satisfying; safeguarding, victim support, family intervention and long-term prevention are mostly invisible and boring which matters because public attention and political pressure tend to follow the version of a problem people can easily picture...

for anyone confused about his point consider this, do you think Chris Hansen/the show/the public cared MOST about protecting children? or more about good content/profits? if it was protecting children and getting rid of abusers (there is a word I would use instead of abusers but can't to not get auto banned) if so then why broadcast your methods for millions to watch? your now making the worst of these people more aware of the traps and methods as well as the law as well as what to avoid, or to put it simply, did the to "catch a predator show" actually prevent law enforcement/police catching an abuser? and/or did it give abusers the knowledge they needed to make sure they wouldn't get caught

people are so into the "kill all pedophiles" idea, that they forget that not all people with these thoughts act on them, and that most of them don't want to be that way. but instead we dehumanise them to the point where seeking help for it becomes impossible

i doubt the film will touch on this & i doubt society is ready for this element of the conversation but i fully think the lurid & sometimes obsessive fascination with this genre of content is a proxy for the exploitation itself. there are layers of projection & scapegoating & titillation & protesting too much that just seem so obvious but how would you even begin to unravel that

Another point I’d like to add is kind of the same concept as “strict parents make sneaky kids”, in the sense that the show could have just made predators more careful and cautious, rather than preventing them from doing something. Ofc we don’t know how much that could have happened, but I doubt a lot of predators would have actually stopped harming kids bc of the show, but rather just took alternative routes.

people forget that being against things like pedophilia and child trafficking is like.... the bare minimum of human decency, not a virtue in of itself. but how those problems get tackled matters, and too many times it's happening to fulfill one person's moral arc and not in a sustainable way that actually can bring true justice to the victims that they claim to care so much about. stopping every pedophile at the point of a gun or a camera is ridiculous, unsustainable, and exploitative.

What I always remember is the men who said they had seen his sting operations and STILL went forward trying to prey on a child. I think it let society know that these people exist en mass. I think at that time people didnt understand that the problem was so widespread. But did the show prevent the actual abuse or convice people not to offend? I don't know.

The idea that even thinking about having the conversation where we look at was it all positive is met with such push back is insane. If we can say “if one kid was potentially saved it was all worth it” but can’t also say “if one kid was allowed to be harmed because of it it’s not ok” says a lot about our society.
