T.B.T— IN LOVING MEMORY OF OUR BEAUTIFUL ACTRESS REBECCA ADEBIMPE ADEKOLA, POPULARLY KNOWN AS IRETI.. Before the new generation of Yoruba cinema stars, there was a group of actors who helped build the foundation of the Nigerian film industry during the 1990s. Among the women who stood out during that period was Rebecca Adebimpe Adekola, popularly known as Ireti. There’s a celebrity today who looks exactly like her. I just can’t figure out who… 😁 Ireti was born and raised in Abeokuta, Ogun State, although her family roots were traced to Ogbomoso. She was an actress. She was also a producer, writer and director, and became one of the recognisable female faces of Yoruba-language cinema during the industry’s formative years. Her acting career developed at a time when Yoruba theatre practitioners were increasingly moving their productions from the stage into home-video filmmaking. The period produced many of the actors who would later become major names in Nollywood. Ireti was part of that important transition. She appeared in several productions, including Edunjobi, Ike Owo, Agba Akin, Olaoniran, Alamu S’eniyan, Enikan O Laye, Afinju Alapata, Sikira Ereko, 23/24 Loro Ile Aye and Aye Awa Obinrin, which has been reported as the last film she appeared in before her death. The name Ireti itself came from a film. In 1993, Jide Kosoko released Asiri Nla, in which Rebecca played a character named Ireti. The name became so closely associated with her that it eventually became the name by which an entire generation of Yoruba-film audiences remembered her. She worked alongside several important figures of the Yoruba film tradition, including Taiwo Hassan (Ogogo), and was regarded by colleagues and younger actresses as a source of inspiration. But Ireti’s career was tragically short. On Friday, 27 September 2002, Rebecca Adebimpe Adekola died after a brief illness. Contemporary accounts commonly reported that she died at Unity Hospital, a private medical facility in Surulere, Lagos, with complications suspected to have been related to typhoid fever. May her memory continue to live. 🕊️ ❤️ Our books are available in hardcopy .. Please send a DM to us on WhatsApp to get your copy 09010030287 #Historylovers
