𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐚 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞? 🇲🇾👀 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐀𝐑𝐎𝐍𝐆 𝐒𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐄. ✨ For me, this journey began in 2014 with LIPSTICK: Celebrating Life as One—with a vision to represent Bharathanatyam through a distinctly Malaysian lens, while always honouring its origins. As a saree lover, I have spent years sourcing and wearing beautiful sarees from India and Sri Lanka. But the restless part of me kept asking: 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬—𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧? By 2018, the idea of creating a saree with a Malaysian identity had begun. It was discussed and explored, but the timing was not quite right, and the vision could not be fully realised then. Well, I guess some ideas simply wait for their moment. And that moment finally arrived this year during the month of Merdeka—a deeply meaningful month when we celebrate our nation, heritage and identity. 🇲🇾 Quite beautifully and unexpectedly, the opportunity arose to unveil the first version of the Malaysian Sarong Saree during my performance at the Peranakan Exchange event on 1 August 2026. There is still much more research, development, refinement and collaboration ahead before it evolves into something truly and authentically Malaysian for everyone to wear with pride. So, Malaysia—I need your ideas. 👇 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞? Bunga raya? Wau bulan? Traditional textiles? Something completely unexpected? Share your ideas below. Your voice could help shape an authentic Malaysian Saree—created by Malaysians and shared proudly with the world.
