@_sammyadjei: “WASTING PEOPLE’S TIME IS PARTIAL MURDER.” I heard this powerful statement from my mentor, Capt. (Rtd.) Prince Kofi Amoabeng, during his lecture at Stanford Graduate School of Business, and it has stayed with me. It sounds extreme until you think deeply about it. What is life made of? Time. If I take GH₵1,000 from you, there is a possibility that the money can be recovered or replaced. But if I unnecessarily waste three hours of your time, nobody can give you those three hours of your life back. This has serious implications for leadership and business. You schedule a meeting for 10:00am and casually arrive at 12:00pm. You invite 20 employees into a two-hour meeting when only five of them actually need to be there. You keep a supplier, customer or job applicant waiting for hours without any consideration for their time. You ask someone to travel across town for a conversation that could have been handled with a five-minute phone call. We sometimes treat these things as normal. But they have a cost. A two-hour unnecessary meeting involving 20 employees isn't merely two hours lost. It is 40 human-hours lost. And beyond the financial cost to the organisation, those are portions of people's lives that cannot be recovered. This is why respecting people's time is more than punctuality. It is respect for life. As leaders, employers and professionals, we should constantly ask ourselves: Does this person really need to attend this meeting? Can this be handled with a phone call or message? Am I keeping people waiting simply because my position allows me to? Am I spending other people's time as carefully as I spend my own? One of the easiest ways to show people that you value them is to value their time. As Capt. (Rtd.) Prince Kofi Amoabeng puts it: “Wasting people’s time is partial murder.” Strong words. But perhaps that's exactly why the lesson is so difficult to forget. Money has a replacement. Time doesn't have a refund policy.
